The trickster Coyote had a son whom he loved dearly. One day, the boy went to the river to get some water. The rushes turned into rattlesnakes and killed the boy. Coyote was grief-stricken. He realised that bringing death was a bad idea, and pleaded with the Earthmaker to bring the boy back to life. When Earthmaker refused, Coyote became an everlasting mischief-maker in the world.
